The social , economical and political disagreements in our society are on states right, tariffs and slavery. Sectionalism is basically loyalty to a specific section rather than a nation as a whole. In 1819, The U.S. began to divide up onto sections because of the Westward Expansion and the rise of "King Cotton" in the South. North and South had a conflict between economic and political interests. Each section of the U.S. wanted their own national laws. It was a big deal when one law was made to help one section when there was an expense on the other.

1820: States Rights- The Right of a state to limit Federal Power.
1828-1832: Nullification- State declaring a federal law illegal and canceling it.
1846-1848: Mexican Cession- The defeat of Mexico in the Mexican War lead to claiming the Mexcan Cession.
1850: The Compromise of 1850- Was a plan to admit California as a free sate. Also, the Fugitive Slave Law was a capture and return of running away slaves.
1852: Harriet Beecher Stowe wrote Uncle Tom's Cabin. This was a novel, whiched exposed the cruilty of slavery and everything that they went through.
1854: Two new territories where created, Kansas and Nebraska, these territories came from the Lousiana Purchase.
1856: Bleeding Kansas- When there was a violence between proslavery and antislavery settlers who came into the state. An antislavery supporter named John Brown led a very violent campaign to end slavery.
1860: Abraham Lincoln was elected. Republicans wanted to end slavery, but they believed that Lincoln was an abolitionist, who would end slavery and end a southerners way of life.

In the 1860's, I would want to end slavery. So I would have to secede from the Union. Everyone thought that Abraham Lincoln wanted to end slavery because he was an abolitionist, but people felt threatend by Lincoln and they started to secede from the Union.
